How Can You Be A Part Of Earth Day?
How Did Earth Day Begin?
Every 22 April, Earth Day is celebrated by many around the world to demonstrate our support for environmental protection. The first Earth Day was celebrated back in 1970 in the United States. Teach-in classes were set up across the country, with 20 million participants hosted and educated about the impact of our practices on the environment. Today in 2022, many across the globe are celebrating it from their own homes and communities by making small changes and incorporating sustainable habits to their lifestyles.
Why is Earth Day so significant? It is important for us to recognise the harm that humans have inflicted on Earth and more importantly, discover how we can save the one and only Earth we live on. Going back to the key question, how can you join in and play your part in this movement?
How Can You Play Your Part?
Here are 4 easy and practical steps you can take in commemorating Earth Day.
1. Recycle Responsibly And Regularly

We all know the 3Rs — Reduce, Reuse and Recycle — but do we know the proper way of recycling? Look around you, I am sure you would have noticed a recycling bin within your vicinity. This makes recycling extra convenient for us! Instead of mindlessly dumping all the items you want to recycle into the recycling bin, you should first sort them out according to their categories. The most common ones would be Plastic, Glass, Metal, and Paper.
It is also equally important for us to integrate recycling into our lifestyle. In 2021, three in five households recycled regularly. Although this ratio may seem satisfactory, we can always do more to protect our Earth. Together, let us improve this ratio in 2022!
2. Participate In A Beach Clean-Up Exercise

Waste being thrown carelessly on the beach and coastal lines are a common sight these days. This waste not only pollutes the beaches, but also endangers sea creatures who mistake the waste for food. After consuming the waste, they are unable to digest it, which eventually leads to their unfortunate death.
Volunteer and sign up to join a beach clean-up exercise with your family and friends to start. You can check out organisations such as Green Nudge and Guardians of Mother Earth who have been actively conducting beach clean-ups in Singapore. We can all play a part to make our beaches cleaner, more beautiful, and safer than ever before.
3. Opt For Taking The Public Transport

Instead of driving your personal vehicle, why not opt to take public transport instead to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions? We are fortunate to live in Singapore where the public transport system is well-developed and easily accessible from just about anywhere around the island. With the rise in car-sharing and carpooling services, we have even more transportation options to choose from. If you are not travelling far, you can choose to cycle to your destination as well!
Too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere creates havoc on the amount of heat energy trapped and gradually increases the Earth’s temperature. When we travel via public transport, we are decreasing the number of vehicles on the road which are emitting large amounts of carbon dioxide. Doesn't that sound great?
4. Use Reusable Bags

Bringing reusable bags out with us would help a great deal in reducing the amount of plastic waste incurred. In 2020, Singapore generated 868,000 tonnes of plastic waste, whereby only 4% was recycled. These statistics go to show we still have a long way to go before we can bring these numbers to a sustainable level.
When we swap out plastic bags for reusable bags, you will be surprised to see the difference it makes. Imagine in 1 day, you use 5 plastic bags to carry your purchases, but if you have a reusable bag, that is 5 fewer plastic bags used. If 100,000 Singaporeans do the same, that is 500,000 plastic bags saved. Now can you visualise the impact a small act can create when we combine our efforts?
How Lendor Aims To Play Its Part
At Lendor, we are also enthusiastic to participate in making our Earth greener. Our rental services promote collaborative consumption amongst customers when they rent or rent out items on our circular platform. This contributes back to the circular economy as items are being ‘reused’ and enables purchases to go the extra mile.
Additionally, our Try Now, Buy Later service enables customers to experience the products they are interested in before making their purchase decision. This empowers us to minimise the amount of unnecessary waste generated from regretful purchases.
Together We Can Make A Difference
